Persuasive Essay On School Shootings

Around the world, guns are used in various things such as hunting, warfare, shooting ranges, and much more. There is one particular action that has increased drastically within the past decades. This is none other than mass shootings in the United States. Since the spark in mass shootings, people have discussed ways to prevent this from happening, but others do not want the laws to change. Although each argument has their benefits and liabilities, America must do something about the deaths and injuries of thousands of people. Changing the laws would have benefits such as decrease in deaths and injuries of others and reduce the societal costs, but argues against the Constitution.

I have been a student in the Thomas County School System ever since I started pre-school. During my time here, I have loved every minute of it, learning and having great experiences with friends and teachers here. Over the last four years of my high school experience, I have noticed that there have been more threats of bombings and shootings around the nation. Even though we do have a safe school and take precautions, there is still room for error. I am proposing that we make school a safer place for kids to learn by installing bulletproof glass as well as door-stoppers in each class.

A very controversial topic throughout the United States and the world is guns. As American citizens, we have a constitutional right to own a fire arm. But why is a gun so important and why is it such a huge part of the United States division of its people? The division starts with people using this Second Amendment to harm people. In recent years, mass shootings have become the norm for the United States and that outcome is not the purpose of the Second Amendment. These mass shooting happen everywhere from movie theatres to concert halls. But the majority of these mass shootings seem to happen at schools with innocent children aging from kindergarten to high school students. With the deaths of children in school rising, the urge to find a solution and develop prevention tactics have become top priority. Not only limiting the access to guns but finding out the reason behind the shootings will help aid in the fight to stop gun violence in schools.

There has been an average of one school shooting every week in America since the Sandy Hook shooting. On the fourteenth of December, 2012, in Newtown, Connecticut, 20-year-old Adam Lanza not only killed his mother in her home, but also twenty children and six members of staff at the Sandy Hook Elementary School. This was to be the third deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history. The Huffington Post reports that as of 2014, there have been over 200 school shootings. These have resulted in at least 94 deaths and over 156 serious and minor injuries. And, with an issue as emotive and contentious as the murder of school children, the question has been frequently asked: why do school shootings happen?

Have you ever wondered why someone would pick up a gun and point it at a classmate, a family member, or yet, a child's innocent face. These questions haunted me after I got a message from a friend saying there might be a school shooting tomorrow . I have always known my school to be a safe place, and such news frightened me. A few hours later I got a message from the same friend. This time, she said “the news was a rumor". Even though I was comforted by knowing it was a rumor, I wanted to have a wider understanding of such incidents. After reading a few article I saw a trend, Every Time a school shooting or any mass shooting happens in general, guns become the main topic throughout the nation, and the country gets divided into pro-guns and anti-guns. This event of polarization would continue until the next shooting where people get and more polarized rather than focusing on the issue. But we have to recognize this, what we need to solve is not just what method the shooter used, but the events leading to that decision.

There are many problems in this world today. One main problem in the United States and all over the world is mass shootings. This problem is a huge one because it involves people killing other people and that is just unacceptable. In the last ten years there have been over 53 mass shootings in the United States, not including the rest of the world (Chris Wilson). In the last thirty-five years there have been seven-hundred and twenty-two and then one thousand one-hundred seventy-seven (Chris Wilson). If you look at the number of people that are killed or being wounded, you will notice that with new devices being introduced. One of the devices that have been introduced is a bump stock. This device is a stock for a semi-automatic rifle that can basically turn your semi-automatic rifle into a fully automatic rifle. They are considering making this attachment to a rifle illegal to the public.

In The United States of America, 285 people have been injured and 126 have been killed in a total of 73 shootings that have occurred within the first three months of 2018 (Mass Shootings Tracker). This is a sad reality which is sweeping across America. Gun control has become an increasingly controversial topic in our nation, but people aren’t shying away from it. In order to create a safer society with less gun-related incidents, we need to set more gun reform laws that regulate the manufacture, sale, transfer, possession, modification, and use of firearms by civilians.

My point is is that where do these gun laws take place, never? why do we decide to sell these mentally ill people guns when they are causing these school shootings when are we going to change these gun laws, how are these kids getting guns. What we need to do is if people have records of being mentally ill we need to not sell the these guns, if we make it so mentally ill people cant get there hands on guns there would be a big decrees in school shootings, In 2018 alone there where 20 school shooting where people where hurt or killed.

In 1999, the state of Connecticut passed a gun seizure law allowing judges to confiscate guns from citizens if the police can provide evidence that the person is a threat to society or to themselves. Within two weeks of the seizure, a hearing must be held which will determine if the gun may be returned to the citizen or if the state will be authorized to hold the gun for up to a year. This law was put into place after four killings with a firearm in 1998 by a mentally ill man. The state of Indiana has a similar law, which was passed in 2005, and two other states, California and New Jersey, are now contemplating the enforcement of regulations like those in Connecticut and Indiana after a mass killing in Santa Barbra, California by a mentally

Summer is over and school has started. Students across the U.S. re-enter the educational buildings once left behind in the grade level prior. Many things are shared in the safety of a class room, to include: laughing, notes, questions, and resources. These learning platforms foster a contagion for knowledge and contribution that will spread from generation to generation. Parents expect curriculum to be followed in the school systems and for any type of contagion to include nothing more than the common cold, not mass shootings. Homicides gain abundant media attention and therefore stem copycat shooters. The Media should not be allowed to report on stories of mass shootings, as the likelihood of a second or copycat killer immediately after

“Former Student Opens Fire at Florida High School, killing 17” According to NBC News, this was the tragic headline after another school shooting. This can’t happen anymore. Something needs to be done about the tragic school shootings. That's why I think teachers should be properly trained and then given a gun.

We now live in a world where we have to protect children no matter where they are. It's crazy how we now have to take extra precautions to protect children while they are even at school. School shootings have gotten more frequent and deadly in the past few years. Approximately 17 years ago on April 20, 1999 in a small town called Littleton, Colorado, one high school was about to change forever. It was one of the deadliest school shootings in the nation's history.

Mass shootings have become a problem in the United States and the only way to decrease the number of incidents is to enforce stricter gun laws. In the recent years gun laws have come under fire for a variety of reasons that all stems back to the tolerance for high caliber and magazine weapons in our country. Assault rifles and other rapid-fire weapons have become all too easy to acquire in our nation and I believe the citizens of the United States have begun to realize this. Consumers have found loop holes around the newly implemented laws in the United States with third party acquisitions and gun shows that take place around the nation. With the recent laws that have been imposed, stricter background checks as well as an increase in the number of conceal and carry permits. I believe this is a great sign for our country with these laws, we are allowing citizens who have been trained and have checked all the boxes to carry weapons and ideally be in positions to defend us against attackers. For example, in San Antonio this last weekend a good Samaritan with a conceal and carry permit was able to wound an active shooter while he was fleeing the scene. I understand he did not prevent the incident, but I believe he was taking necessary actions to stop the shooter from harming other unarmed citizens. In this essay I will discuss what laws and precautions have been put in place to eliminate other incidents such as this one and whether they are adequate for this day and age.

Our schools have been deeply affected by mass shootings and weak gun violence laws. This country has had over 1000 mass shootings in the past two years and over 50 school shootings, killing thousands of innocent little children. Our government needs to put up strict gun laws that allow administrators in all schools to use necessary force against a school shooter or anyone who tries to harm students of such nature.

Throughout the years there have been a numerous of school shootings, and they have become more mainstream, this has caused people to stand up to the government for not doing nothing about it. I plan to argue an issue that has been put aside, and it is more relevant than ever. At the start of 2018, there have been many school shootings about 1.25 a week.
