Retention: A Case Study

A treatment plan is created and in the next visit, brackets are cemented to each tooth and linked with an arch wire. The patient returns monthly for retightening and adjustments. Retention in the nursing profession is a concern that needs to be understood and corrected. Multiple areas of the healthcare system are affected by nursing retention, and these areas need to be considered when addressing the concern. Cost of nursing retention is high for organizations because of resources used to maintain and hire for the open positions. Quality patient care should always be at the forefront of reasons that nursing retention needs attention and improvement. Not all cost of retention are associated with monetary value, patient outcomes need the utmost consideration in dealing with nursing retention. Long-term retention is a learned behavior. With practice one can retain more and more information. The key to long-term retention is practice. After analyzing the video, the teacher was able to engage her students in learning how to summarize. The teacher taught a lesson to the student on how to summarize a story and how important it is. Some of the strategies the teacher used were how to slow down and think about what you just read using visual aids and modeling for the students. In the video the teacher stated, “Stop” and “Think”, by using this strategy the teacher used to get the learners to understand what they just read by pinpointing important parts of their reading, such a person or action. Another strategy is the use of visual aids. Visual aids give the students the bigger picture of summarizing by seeing what should be summarized. The third example of strategy is through the use of modeling. By modeling the teacher was able to show each one of her learners how she summarized the reading as a group. Recent surveys about retention procedures, done by (Renkema, et al. 2009) and (Lai, et al. 2014), showed some similarities among orthodontists practicing in various countries, such as a frequent use of fixed retainers on mandibular teeth, and an increased popularity of removable vacuum-formed retainers..

Some orthodontists prefer to use dual retention during the retention phase, in which the patient will be asked to wear a removable retainer in addition to the bonded fixed retainer, so that if the bonded retainer fails, the teeth can be held by the removable retainer (Johnston and Littlewood 2015) (Figure 2.5). Using a removable retainer alone or in conjunction with a fixed retainer can both retain the teeth in their position and reduce relapse, and no significant clinical differences are observed between the two retention methods, especially if the retention phase lasts for more than one year (Walker 2013).

Bracket failure increases the time spent in surgery for repairs and the overall treatment time. At present orthodontics can choose between three groups of adhesives which may be set with a chemical reaction or curing light. Some adhesives may prevent early decay around brackets because they contain fluoride. There is only weak unreliable evidence that one adhesive may possibly have more failures associated with it and another adhesive may be more protective against early decay.

In this study, the retention phase was divided into four periods, and the dentists were asked to define the duration of each period in details, while using removable retainers. There were big differences in dentists' responses, because not all the dentists were following a four periods retention regimen. First of all, ensuring the effectiveness of direct retainer is key to increase effectiveness of indirect retention. There’s very high chance of total displacement of the denture instead of rotation if the rest and the direct retainer fail in maintaining the clasp assembly. In such cases, indirect retainer cannot prevent the denture from displacement (Carr, 2004). In other words, the indirect retainer becomes meaningless if the direct retainer loses its function. Another factor is the distance from the fulcrum line. It is clear that the performance of the indirect retainer increases with the increase in the distance between the fulcrum line and the point where the force is applied (Carr, 2004). The topic I chose to research and discuss is the topic of recruiting and retaining the best employees. I chose this subject because I felt it was important for an employer trying to compete in this very competitive business environment, no matter what the business is, to be able not only hire the best and most qualified employees but retain them and keep them motivated. The ability to distinguish the difference between high performing employees and lower performing employees can be detrimental to a company’s success or failure. In retrospect, this goes back to recruiting and retaining the best employees while avoiding and being able to let go of those of a weaker caliber. Vincent Tinto’s (1975) Student Integration Model (SIM) of attrition was designed to offer an explanation of all of the aspects and processes that influenced an individual’s decision to leave college or university, and how these processes interact to ultimately produce attrition (McCubbin, 2003). Tinto aimed to do several things. First, he aimed to differentiate between different types of leaving behavior. This is important as there are a number of different ways in which a student may choose, or be forced to leave, college. Until Tinto’s model, these learning behaviors were often grouped under the rubic of dropout (McCubbin, 2003). The different types of Tinto’s (1993) theory of student departure is the most widely cited theory for explaining the student departure process and has reached “near paradigmic status” in the field of higher education (Braxton, Milem, & Sullivan as cited in Guiffrida, 2006). According to Tinto (1993), most student integration models feature the concepts of social integration and academic integration. But what is meant by these concepts and what is the difference between them?

Students are one of the most important parts of the educating process. Without them, there would be no need for the education system. The students’ best interests are always at the center of the decisions being made, regarding the education system. Retention affects hundreds of thousands of children annually (Turnet & Kaskins, 2014). The topic of holding students back is one that has been debated for years. Holding students back is also referred to as being retained. Retention refers to “a child repeating his or her grade level again the following year” (Fitz, 2007). Retention is one response to students who under-achieve. Retention gives the student an extra year to perform at grade level (Martin, 2011). This became a hot topic of interest after the “No Child Left Behind” policy was put into place in 2002 (Phillips, 2008). This policy focused on helping the students that were at a high-risk of failure. These students were the ones that would potentially be held back. This shift in focus highlighted the need of meeting grade level requirements, so no child would be left behind. A problem arose when students were not meeting their grade-level requirements. Thus, the education system was left with a decision to make: hold the student back or promote them to the next grade level. The effects of being promoted to the next grade level or being retained have been studied to try to solve this dilemma.
