A Leadership Style Analysis

The results of my Leadership Style Assessment was a Participatory Leader. I believe that the results were accurate. I try to listen and understand to everyone’s point of view before making a decision regarding others at work. “Participative leadership also known as Democratic Leadership Style is a method of leadership that involves all team members in terms of identifying important goals as well as developing strategies and procedures to achieve the goals. From this point of view, participative style of leadership can be perceived as a leadership style that relies primarily on functioning as a facilitator that the one who simply issues commands or orders or making assignment for each member of the team.” ("Participative Leadership," p. 1-2) The definition of Participative Leader to me means a Leader that listens and considers every point of view before making a final decision.

Urban Meyer is the head coach for The Ohio State Buckeyes football team. He is 49 years old and was born in Toledo Ohio. He attended University of Cincinnati where he played football. Coach Meyer is married and has three children. Prior to coaching Ohio State he retired from coaching was working as a sports analyst for ESPN. Before retiring and working for ESPN, Coach Meyer was the head coach for the University of Florida. The theme of leadership is relevant today for many areas of life. After consulting the dictionary, one can construe the leadership as an inner force that manifests in the ability to influence and to control others. A person possesses this quality when he/she can guide masses and move them to the goal, take the consequences and realize the responsibility for himself/herself and others. If a project or event was successful, the leader is praised. If the project was a failure, the leader is often viewed as a failure. My leadership style assessed by the Kent tool is participative style of leadership. (University of Kent (n.d). Participative style of leadership is the type where the entire team works in collaboration. Each of the team members contributes their valuable ideas, but the final decision is made by the leader (University of Kent. (n.d). This is truly the leadership style that I love to exhibit. Participative leader always encourage inputs from the members to assist in decision making. For example, in a code blue situation, team leader directs the code, but each member has designated roles and communicates throughout the situation, aiming towards a single goal. Leadership is an incremental component that centers the existence, survival and functioning of any group or organisation. Indeed, the organisations recognise that their success is highly-dependent upon the quality and effectiveness of this dimension. There are two main functions that leaders are bounded to perform. The first is central on accomplishing the task towards the attainment of goals such as initiating actions, keeping members attention on the goal, clarifying issues, helping the group develop a procedural plan, evaluating the work done and making expert information available. The second is on developing member’s feelings to maintain the strength of the organisation. Leaders are expected to keep interpersonal relations, arbitrate excuse, provide encouragement, give chance to divert, stimulate self-direction and increase interdependence among organisational members.

Leadership is a concept most people feel informed enough to discuss, but that few are truly educated sufficiently to comment on. This paper is a critique of preceptor leadership methods. I will describe my current preceptor’s leadership style, giving an example of an observed valuable leadership strategy and why I found it to be successful. Shadowed by an example of an observed unsuccessful leadership strategy, how I responded, and a recommended strategy for the situation described. Ending with the type of leader I aspire to be in the future and my final thought regarding leadership.
