Since the dawn of human existence many have understood the importance of service to one 's society. It existed during the early stages of civilization when hunter-gatherers came of age to hunt with the older men of their clan. It also aided in freeing the United States from the tight grip of British tyranny. It was a burden many understood as relevant, but is now seen in an unappealing light. Former president Abraham Lincoln made a statement that the principle of the draft was not new and has been practiced in all ages of the world. Lincoln makes a claim that this idea was well known to the framers of our constitution "…as one of the modes of raising armies, at the time they placed in that instrument the provision that 'the congress shall …show more content…
Before congress made improvements to the draft in 1971, a man could qualify for a deferment if he could show he was a full-time student making satisfactory progress towards a degree. Under this new draft law, a college student can only have his induction postponed until the end of their academic year.
Another aspect that would differ from the drafts prior would be the induction of women into the military as well. In drafts prior only men were inducted to combat U.S. enemies, but if one were held today men and women between the ages of 18-25 would be drafted into an 18-month civilian or military service. This new category of soldiers creates equality for both genders so there is less of a patriarchy in the military. Although equality has many positive outcomes, in this situation it may be negative because no one enjoys being forced into possibly dangerous situations. For example, if a woman had to help aid a fallen soldier during intense gunfire she risks putting both lives in danger.
One portion that would remain identical to previous drafts would be the continuation of the lottery system. The first thing all men and women would do is sign a selective service paper.
This paper would state that if a draft was to occur and their age bracket was chosen at random they would be required by law to accept their transition into the armed services (Draftees Should

As women volunteered for service for a resistant military, compared to the many men that the government drafted it was clear the military did not appreciate their commitment, sacrifices and value the worth of women. This was evident by the Army Reorganization Act in 1920, which granted military nurses “relative rank” of an officer, not receiving the same pay, benefits, and privileges
Another thing that should prevent women to be in the draft is emotion. Women are complex beings with many chemical emotions causing them to react differently than men. Women’s brains perceive things in a more maternal way there for they consider circumstances differently. If a situation was complicated and needed an immediate reaction a woman might not be the right person to make an instant and thought out decision. She might reflect on it in a way that didn’t conjure what the troop needed at the moment. Women that are forced to be in war can easily get overwhelmed. Men can come through due to instinct after hundreds of years of being the ones who take care of the physical and difficult tasks at hand but women might not be as likely to react logically and can be easily inundated by the stress. Having maternal instinct rather than survival technique can be a vast disadvantage in combat causing emotion to be a handicap.
It is the said that by the end of World War II 50 million men between the age of nineteen and forty-five had registered for the draft . 10 million were inducted into the draft of that 50 million. By the end of the second world war over 24 million men where
At the constant incline of students enlisting in the military and the re-enlistment rate of soldiers being "137%" of the predicted rate, there would be no physical need for a draft. (Griffin)The constant growth of the American Military only proves the fact that a military draft isn't as necessary as it was in previous years, or previous wars, such as the Chinese Civil War, Greek Civil War, First Indochina War, Korean War, and lastly the Second Indochina War, or Vietnam War.
Today if there were a draft it would be completely different from the way they have done it for the Vietnam War. Men could have lower reasons to not go into the draft congress tried to make some changes to the act in 1971 so that young men could qualify for deferment.” Under the draft law can have his induction postponed only until his current semester is over”(Smith). The lottery would still help determine what the call line will be, but before that the local board called classified men as 1-A from ages 18 to
The draft began in 1940, when President Roosevelt signed the Selective Training and Service Act, requiring all men eighteen and older to sign up for the draft in case we ever have a lack of troops to defend America’s freedom, or another world war. In Rostker v. Goldberg in 1981, the Supreme Court decided that omitting women from the requirement to sign up for the draft was not, in fact, unconstitutional (Women and the Draft, sss.gov). However, as of today, there has been much speculation as to whether or not the gender restriction will be lifted.
If the draft was still potentially a thing that happened today go to war
With an estimated 75 million total casualties and the only war to use nuclear weapons, World War Two is still the deadliest war. In March 1947, the Selective Training And Service Act expired and was replaced in 1948 by the reenacted Selective Service Act. Currently known as the Selective Service System, any man in the United States has to register for the system within 30 days of their 18th birthday. If a war is to begin again, anyone registered for the Selective Service System aged 18 to 25 will form the draft pool. The draft is important and should stay a law as it provides support to the military during times where the military population might be stretched
Women in the Draft In the year of 1917, President Woodrow Wilson founded the United States Selective Service System. The federal government adopted the system to help build an army for America to enter World War I. All men between the ages of 18 and 25 are required by law to register for the draft within the first 30 days of their 18th birthday otherwise they will be penalized. Sociology expert, Geva, explains that although men were required to register for the draft there were some expectations: “Men with economic dependents, including a wife and or/children, would be deferred from the draft.
Later on in the war, the age limit was raised between the ages of 17 to 50. In many states such as Missouri and Iowa, the threat of drafting was used to help speed up volunteering. However, in 1862 the Militia Act gave authority to the
The United States used the draft and all men from age 18 to 45 were included, providing over 16
There is no active draft set in place in the United States. A group called the Selective Service System administers the draft of the United States. The United States initiated the Selective Training and Service Act of 1940, which made it mandatory for all men, ages 21 through 25 to register for the SSS. The question as to why it is mandatory for men to register for the draft has arisen over the years, and the answer is basically historical. However, times have changed and we live in a world where both men and women are able to serve in the United States military. The acceptance of woman into the U.S military began in the late 20th century, where it was proved that women can serve as effective combat troops. Recently, in today’s news the topic of women registering for the SSS has been brought up. Although I agree with equal
Every day goes by and women still aren't allowed in to serve in some of the departments of the military. For example women are not aloud to serve for the Navy SEALs and Marine Corps Infantry. They aren’t allowed to serve in Infantry units because they often involve fighting in small units on the front lines, doing physically demanding tasks. Today the standards are set lower for women, looking to join the Marine Corps, in order to pass physical fitness test and the combat test. Only two years ago women were not aloud to serve on the front lines. In the present day many women are able to fight in combat situations by discrimination against them is a major issue. Women have been steadily moving into previously all-male jobs across the military,
The first part of this lecture discussed whether or not someone 's draft rights can be sold to another willing to accept payment for their substitution of service. Sandel states the fact that steel titan, Andrew Carnegie, sold his draft rights to another citizen to take his place
First of all, the law prohibiting women from registering in the draft does not uphold with the current societal norm.
