Question
Chapter 7.5, Problem 1BC
Summary Introduction
To analyze:
The method by which plants transport water needed for photosynthesis into their leaves.
Introduction:
The photosynthesis is required by the plant to harvest the light energy from the sunlight and convert the atmospheric carbon dioxide into a usable form of carbohydrates. The carbohydrate synthesized by the plant is glucose that is stored in the form of starch.

Why do plant leaves look green to us?
1. Because pigments in chloroplasts absorb green light, while red and blue light is reflected
2. Because pigments absorb red and blue light, while the green light is reflected
3. Because pigments absorb red and blue light and green light is emitted from their excited states
4. Because pigments in chloroplasts absorb green light, while red and blue light passes through the leaf
1. Look at the molecular formula for plant tissue. Where does the carbon
come from?
2. Where does the hydrogen in C6H12O6 come from?
3. When radioactive isotopes of oxygen atoms are put into CO2 molecules
and the plant is allowed to photosynthesize, only new plant tissue
(C6H12O6) is radioactive and the oxygen gas given off is not radioactive.
Draw a dotted line in the photosynthesis equation to show where the
oxygen atoms in CO2 go.
4. Draw a dotted line in the equation to show where the oxygen atoms
in H20 go.

They have 3 treatment groups: red light, green light, and no light. They choose red light because chlorophyll has been shown to absorb red light. They choose green light because chlorophyll has been shown to reflect green light. They choose no light as a negative control to examine the rate of photosynthesis in the absence of light. To measure photosynthetic rate, the scientists use sensors to measure oxygen production of plants exposed to the different light treatments. Choose the best scientific hypothesis: O Photosynthesis is a critical process for plants, and it is of great importance that we understand how it is impacted by different wavelengths of light. O If rate of oxygen production is higher under red light than it is under green light or no light, it proves that red light has the largest effect on photosynthesis.
