Concept explainers
Interpretation:Explain the relationship between quality of design and quality of conformance.Comment on the possibility that a product meets the quality of design but not the quality of conformance and vice versa.
Concept Introduction:Quality, in simple language is the extent to which the customer’s requirements are fulfilled. Fulfillment of customers’ requirements is expected to ensure customer satisfaction. The customers’ requirements are converted through designing processes to parameters which can be manufactured and delivered. This is called the quality of design.
Explanation of Solution
Quality of conformance means complying with the quality of design unless deviations are given in which case quality of design shall be compromised i.e. not met while quality of conformance is OK. On the other hand, if a defective product is shipped, it conforms to quality of design but not of conformance.
Quality of design relates to the customers’ requirements e.g., a customer of a 5-star restaurant has requirements different from the customer of a 3 star or a roadside restaurant. The restaurants are designed accordingly.
If the manufactured product meets the parameters specified by design (meaning to be customer requirements), the product is called to be meeting the quality of conformance.
The producers are required to produce the products in accordance with this quality of design i.e., the customer requirements. Thus, there is a direct relationship between the two qualities.
Defectives are such products, as do not comply with the requirements of design thereby failing in both the qualities.
However, deviations may be authorized by producing authority to deviate from the quality of design. Further, such deviations may be with the approval of the customer. In such cases, the quality of conformance has been achieved while the product fails in quality of design.
Vice versa is not possible i.e. one cannot produce quality of conformance while not complying with quality of design.
